On October 16, 2018, the United States announced its intention to negotiate a trade agreement with Britain. On 2 March 2020, the United Kingdom published its negotiating objectives for a free trade agreement with the United States. On May 5, 2020, the governments of the United States and the United Kingdom began negotiations for a free trade agreement between the United States and Great Britain. Discussions will focus on trade in goods and services, digital trade, investment and support for SMEs. On 5 and 15 May 2020, around 200 British and US negotiators held the first round of negotiations for a free trade agreement between Britain and the US. Trade agreements also aim to remove quotas – restrictions on the amount of goods that can be traded. Given the strategic importance of the services sector to the UK economy, it is likely that the UK government will place a strong emphasis on ensuring favourable trading conditions for the export of UK services to the US. . . .
