The Alberta Labour Relations Board conducted an investigation and ordered a secret ballot. If a majority (50% plus one vote) of employees votes «YES», the union is certified and becomes an exclusive negotiator to represent the workers and negotiate a collective agreement. All staff members included in the bargaining unit benefit from the terms of the negotiated agreement. These negotiations were particularly difficult, as the employer came to the table with significant concessions in many areas of each collective agreement. Employees of the three IUOE union offices (consisting of three separate collective agreements – Local 955, Health & Welfare Trust and the Training Centre) have ratified their new three-year collective agreements. Every union employer started without a union, until the workers chose to organize. Work with your colleagues and the union organizer to launch an organizing action. Identify common concerns and issues such as fairness, security. The union organizers take care of the work of the legs, although the more information an «inner» person can provide, the more successful the effort will be. The union organizer establishes a petition or provides union cards that employees sign to indicate their desire for the union to represent them. The anonymity of persons who participate in an organizational action and sign a petition or a trade union card is protected by law. .
